James Rebanks: The Shepherd's Life

It is always interesting to walk in someone else's shoes for a day, to try different walks of life. The next best thing is, to read a book about their lives. And what could be more different in the 21st century than being a shepherd of all things? We are in the luck - James Rebanks, an Oxford graduate decided to follow along with his family tradition and carry the torch in Cumbria raising lamb in some of the most unforgiving terrains known to man. He writes about the life in the fells in a voice that is not only entertaining but that pulls off being authentic - and yes, the words 'UNESCO' and 'fuck' can appear on the same page. While his days are filled with back-breaking work from dawn till dusk, he still manages to write prose that is not only slow but has a distinct bucolic feel to it that did spirit me away from the cubicles of corporate life into the lands of rain, fog, emerald green grass, joys and sorrows where the abilities of a dog, the posture of a sheep and the opinion of your neighbors matters more than the bottom line of the bank account. No wonder James Rebanks' twitter account became a thing.

Sam Harris: Waking up (2013- )

Sam Harris' career as a public intellectual started in the aftermath of 9/11. To him - similarly to Christopher Hitchens - the terrorist attack was a life-changing event. It triggered him to write a book dedicated to expose faith in the supernatural as a malignant force threatening civilisation. In 2007 he became one of the four horsemen of the New Atheists and spent most of the next decade participating in public debates over religion, Islam, free speech and science. Almost all events are available on Youtube and I encourage everyone to watch them. Harris is a terrific debater. Incredibly smart, eloquent and witty.

Blacksad (2000-)

It's the late 50s America. Actresses strive for fame and the attention of the powerful. Scientists experiment with bombs even deadlier than the one what ended the war. The red menace is looming over America and with it right-wing paranoia permeates society. Klansmen hold small towns in their icy grip - or turn them into burning hell. Beatnik poets start to show the middle finger to the conformist society while struggling jazz musicians are mingling with mobsters.

Conquer Club

A Rizikó igazi társasjáték klasszikus, aligha van olyan 14. életévét betöltött ember a nyugati érdekszférában, aki ne találkozott volna vele. Megélt számtalan kiadást és bővítményt, de az alapok változatlanok maradtak. Bármennyire is szerettem azonban, nem tudok úgy visszagondolni rá, hogy ne az elpocsékolt délutánok jussanak az eszembe (egy szombat délután elkezdett partit 6 játékossal gyakran vasárnap este fejeztünk be). De mi lenne, ha nem kéne ezt a 6 embert egy helyre terelni és az órákat egyben befektetni? Mi lenne, ha a létező bővítmények helyett a játékosok bármikor előállhatnának új térképekkel, hogy megküzdjenek akár Középföldéért? Mi lenne, ha lehetőségünk lenne a szabályok megváltoztatására? Például, hogy minden játékos csak annyit lásson a térképből, amennyit az általa kontrollált seregek?

Tao Wong: System Apocalypse (LitRPG series)

A LitRPG egy borzaszó trükkös műfaj, ami mostanában elég sok időmet felzabálja. Egyfelől lebilincselő úgy követni egy fantasy regényt, hogy az ember egy más szemszögből is bebújhat a karakter bőrébe. Másfelől viszont problémát jelent, hogy manapság minden idióta LitRPG-t ír, elvégre egy karakterlappal oldalakat lehet megtölteni, és a párbeszédeket vagy úgy általában a próza szépségét sem kell túlzásba vinni. Születnek "művek", amik leginkább egy kamaszfiú nedves álmait vetik papírra, mások azt mutatják be, hogy lehet a 21. század technológiai tudását bevetve tankot építeni egy fantasy világban. De még a jó könyvek is megszenvednek attól, hogy a karakternek folyamatosan fejlődnie kell, így félelmetesen gyorsan jutunk el a fogalmatlan kezdőtől a világmegváltó félistenig, mert a szerzők egyszerűen kifogynak az elegáns ötletekből.
